Master Locksmiths Access Key

What is a Master Locksmiths Access Key?

The Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK) allows people with a disability 24/7 access to accessible public toilets and facilities with a lock that uses the special MLAK cylinder. The MLAK system aims to remove the difficulty faced by people with a disability in finding an accessible toilet that is open after hours. The key opens doors and toilets in some National Parks, many Council municipalities, elevators at railway stations, the new Changing Places facilities throughout Australia, and disabled toilets that are locked. Not all local councils use the MLAK cylinder – you can contact your local council to ask where you can find an MLAK-enabled facility in your area or filter by MLAK on the National Public Toilet Map.

How do I access a Master Locksmiths Access Key?

Before you can purchase an MLAK, you need to confirm your eligibility through an online form. The form prompts you to enter your contact details and confirm that you are eligible for an MLAK – meaning you need evidence such as a Disability Card, Disability Parking Permit, a letter from your doctor, or similar supporting proof. Once you have confirmed you are eligible through ticking a box on the form, you can purchase a key straight away on the website. The price is $64 as of 1 July 2025. If you are NDIS-eligible, keep your tax invoice as you may be able to claim the purchase.

More details on how and where to use the MLAK are provided on the Master Locksmiths Association of Australia website. If you would like a supporting evidence letter from Crohn’s & Colitis Australia, fill out your details below and we will email you a personalised letter. You should have this on hand in case you are asked to provide documentation to verify your eligibility in the future.
