Ann’s Journey with Ulcerative Colitis

Living with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) for nearly 30 years, Ann O’Kell has experienced her fair share of challenges – including additional health issues like cancer – but her story is ultimately one of resilience, perspective and hope.
For Ann, one of the most important lessons has been understanding that a diagnosis doesn’t mean the end of a full and meaningful life.
“A diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis is not the end of a ‘normal’ life,” she explains. “I’ve never really liked that term anyway – our lives are always evolving through both challenges and joys.”
Instead, Ann encourages people newly diagnosed with UC to focus on finding the right support network early.
“The most important step is finding a team of specialists who listen to you and who you trust. They’ll help you navigate the ups and downs – because no two people experience UC in exactly the same way.”
After decades of living with UC, Ann chose to share her story to reassure others that it is possible to live well, even in the face of ongoing health challenges.
“I’ve shared my story because I still live a full and happy life. There have been difficult moments, but I strongly believe that a positive mindset is key when living with autoimmune diseases.”
She also highlights the importance of allowing space for both honesty and joy.
“It’s important to be able to vent, but also to find joy wherever you can – even in the small things like a beautiful sunset, a spring flower or a moment of laughter.”
Through sharing her experience, Ann hopes to offer encouragement and reassurance to others navigating life with IBD – reminding them that while the journey may be unpredictable, it can still be rich, meaningful and full of moments of joy.
