“Hold on to hope if you can” – Chloe’s story

Hi, my name is Chloe! I would describe myself as an outgoing person who loves living life to the fullest. At 19 years old I noticed blood in my faeces, i didn’t tell anyone and let it continue. Shortly after, I was in lots of pain and very ill. I didn’t want to go to the hospital out of fear of ‘wasting their time and resources’. With a big push from my parents who essentially forced me to go to emergency (which I am forever grateful for!) I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease.

My life changed following the diagnosis. I was no longer the same person. I was overcome with anxiety about where the closest toilet was, and how I would work and study through severe pain. No one expected me to continue working and studying but I decided to push through.

While my Crohn’s is not fully settled, I am happier than ever. I have almost finished my degree in Journalism, I am working in a job that I love and am surrounded by amazing friends and support. I have been able to travel overseas with complications and plan to go on three more trips this year!

I am super optimistic about the future. I know when I finally get settled on the right medication, everything will continue to fall into place. One thing I have learned from this whole experience is to hold on to hope if you can. Things will get better.
