Navigating My Life with Crohn’s Disease – Devin’s Story

I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease when I was 15. Leading up to it, I had been experiencing the classic signs and symptoms, but I had never really heard of Crohn’s or Colitis before. After doing some online research, I realised it could be a possibility for me. A colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy confirmed my diagnosis after I was referred to a gastroenterologist.

Being diagnosed with a serious chronic illness at 15 is hard to describe. It tests your resilience and strength in ways you would never expect, and there were days when even simple things, like going to school, felt overwhelming. Facing that fear and uncertainty at a young age is tough.

But being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease didn’t stop me, it made me stronger. I am still able to achieve the things I want: work, learning to drive, travel, friendships, and more. It may require extra planning, but it’s so worth it.

Crohn’s affects day-to-day life — food, nutrition, symptoms, medication, and more. But it’s also something you can start to incorporate as a routine, like brushing your teeth. I’ve now tried a few different treatments and am about to start a new one. With that comes a bit of fear but also hope. Organisations like Crohn’s & Colitis Australia are so important to me and the many people living with these conditions.

To anyone living with IBD, remember you’re not alone. With support, self-care, and hope, anything is possible!

Having IBD as a teenager can leave you feeling uncomfortably vulnerable, especially when transitioning into secondary school or preparing for adulthood. If you or a teen you know has IBD, we have a resource that talks in great detail about navigating daily life with IBD for teenagers.
